Body Consciousness

All of us pride ourselves because of our physical appearances. The first lines we use to describe someone are generally descriptive of the persons color of the skin, hair or figure. What we see is what we speak. The physical body is our identity and we are known by it. We clothe it and decorate it with fancy wear and expensive accessories. We bathe it with fragrances and shampoo it often. As we age we look after it more and more. Some of us become obsessed with it and try out anti-aging creams and a sudden interest in workouts may begin. In spite of this body love we keep neglecting it. This is not done deliberately but only out of ignorance. Let me explain to you the importance of your body through the lens of past life therapy.
Consider the case of Shampa ( name changed) who had swelling in her fingers and knuckles for the last two years. Shampa was 28 years old and the doctor had diagnosed her with rheumatoid arthritis. This was really early onset and Shampa was shocked. The consulting doctor called me up and requested me to see Shampa for he was expecting her to become depressed after the diagnosis.
Shampa came to my clinic and sheepishly sat down. She mumbled that she had made a call to me more than a year ago but never came. I am used to this statement as many people have my number for many years but will only come when the time is right or there is a very strong calling for them to work on themselves spiritually. I asked her about the last few years and she tensed. Her fingers I noticed were spread out and unmoving. Her cheeks were puffed and eyes welled with tears. I allowed her to speak. In such a situation the therapist must not reassure but allow the person to express freely. Shampa began  inaudibly and I allowed her to warm up.
She told me that her father was very aggressive since she was little and would beat his mother. She would be standing near the door and watch the violence. All the time she would be angry and want to stop it but because of her young age she was unable to change the situation. She would sit with her dolls and break the hands of the dolls. Her anger was expressed through her play. Her handwriting became worse and she failed in her papers. Her teachers were worried as this was not expected of her. Her report cards showed red lines. Her father began hitting her and started to spare her mother. There came a time when she decided to run away from home. She asked her boyfriend who was five years older to her to marry her. Her husband also turned out to be abusive. Her anger continued to increase and by the time she was 28 years old she had stored so much of anger that it was swelling out from her fingers.

Her body had been damaged. The problem had begun much earlier, what was visible now was just the end result. The anger if it had been nipped when she was young by psychotherapy, family therapy she would have been spared this debilitating illness. The body system is affected last. If the feelings and sensations of anger are resolved and healed the body will be untouched by trauma. The body too has a consciousness which has to release the trauma. This is difficult as it has already created changes in the physical body. If a bone or muscles have been affected past life therapy may not show complete recovery.  The therapy can help in resolving the emotions and sensations and thus alleviate the symptoms of the physical condition.
Shampa was a subject of moderate trance as it was difficult for her to relax due to the pain. A technique called Woolgers Technique was done with her. Here massage is used progressively to relax the subject and put her into a trance state. Shampa felt every relaxed and slowly the induction process was begun. Shampa began to feel the past life than see it. The visuals were not clear but the muscles and skin were giving out pan. She felt that she was being tied with a rope. Her fingers, ankles and waist were feeling pain. She started to groan and wail. Someone is tying me up. I can’t move. In this situation the person must see the perpetrator. She had to be forced to look up and recognize the perpetrator. As she with great difficult looked up she saw herself staring into the eyes of her father. She started to cry and shake. The man whom she identified as her father in a past life was tying her up and shouting at her. There was another man who was standing beside her. As she looked at him she recognized him as her husband. She was panicking now. As I asked her to move ahead she felt that she was dying and her throat started suffocating. She was asked to watch the last thought coming up. She cried out as she was wanting revenge but was helpless as she didn’t consider herself powerful. She felt that she was incapable and expressed her desire to meet these two men in the next life and hurt them.
Shampa recognized that she met these two men in similar abusive situations and she had not equipped herself to fight them. The soul was in a hurry to be born. When this happens the soul is unable to fight her perpetrators and a similar life ensues. Shampa after this session felt much better at getting the answer to her abuse. She decided to leave her husband and get a job. She worked in a BPO and shared an apartment with three more girls. She enrolled for a distance degree program. Her husband somehow realized that he had been abusive and decided to sponser her education and also gave her alimony with which she was able to book a flat. This is the magic of past life therapy. Not only the person who is suffering can get healed but the decision can create a shift the other person. Shampa still has arthritis but it is in remission. She has become happier and joyful. She is behaving her age. Her parents have no contact with her which has worked in her favor. She does not have to cope with any family situation. She is becoming bold in her behavior. She has had many sessions after the first one and has continued to grow spiritually and personally.
Past life therapy works with your body consciousness to heal slowly. Once the persons emotions are transformed the bodily sensations also changes  and so the healing of the body occurs sometimes partially but the condition becomes manageable.
I believe that once the fluid ever flowing emotional energy gets dislodged the physical condition become’s  defocused  from the mind which then is able to move into healthy patterns of thought.
Many cases of psoriasis and asthma as also migraine experience complete relief while of irritable bowel syndrome, tics and chronic fatigue partial. Of course there will always be some sticky ones like leucoderma, anorexia and hairfall where success rates are lower.
With the work getting more and more recognized I have no doubt that this too will see success.

When there is trouble in Paradise

When there is Trouble in Paradise ……

This month let us look at the trauma that children face when their parents suddenly turn their world around. What leads to this situation and what shape does suffering take for the innocent child.

Firstly it is never the fault of the child that adults decide to part. Not a single divorce /separation case that has ever been presented where the cause of the break-up was because of the innocent child. But sadly most children who find themselves in the center of the firing line feel even years later that they should have done something, said something right or just not let it happen. They see themselves as inefficient when the going gets tough. Interpersonal relations are always stressful for them. This is because they believe that they are responsible for making the air easy to breathe. Research indicates that children of divorce homes are twice more likely to sail in the same boat.

The picture drawn by a 7 year old who was facing trauma due to parental strife had each member of the family placed in compartments. These partitions were drawn in the house and each member placed separately.

Secondly the image of the picture that marriage evokes in their mind is one that a young child drew in a trauma workshop. As you can see the family members are compartmentalized. Each having their own space and de linked from each other. When a child grows up in a home where he perceives that the only way to exist is to ‘mind one own business’ his world becomes fragmented. His mind begins to harbor thoughts like-
“ Am I loved?”
“ Is something wrong with me?’
“Should I do something else to make my parents happy?’

The above statements are just a few most commonly thought by the child. These occur in the child’s mind in response to their parents saying –“ Cant you be a good girl” or ‘only if you were more co-operative…’ or ‘ Daddy will be angry if you …’ or ‘ Why cant you just let daddy do what he wants then he will be okay.’ Unknowingly adults begin to sow the seeds of guilt and resentment in the child’s mind. Parents will tell me that they did not mean to make the child feel guilty and that these statements were made in a different context- but did the child know that. How can a small child even understand that what happened in the day when she was studying is not related to the fight that happened in the night for the words that hurt in the afternoon are being repeated in the night too.

Humans have a neuro linguistic powered nervous system where every word has a image, feeling and thought. All words which have a common thread are linked together. All of their images and feelings are also coming together in a common thought. Our brain codes or stores it together. This is the reason that in therapy the child will be able to recall all the incidents that were related to the divorce in a single breath. It is as if that one breath held all the memories together. One push and they all come tumbling down.

A 50 years old woman who was on her yearly trip to meet her parents from America  came to see me last week. She spoke about the difficulty she seems to be having every time she comes to India to spend time with her parents. On inquiry she said that though her parents had been divorced when she was 16 years and both had remarried good people she was still thinking, ‘wish I could do something to get them together’. She knew it was ridiculous and unrealistic but the need was so strong that she realized that in her marriage she was very controlling and scared ; always fearful that something would go wrong; she had become very superstitious and fasted regularly. The happiness was missing she said. Her marriage was okay and she did love her husband but she felt drained cementing their relationship. When she was asked about any specific problems in the relationship with her husband she drew a blank. During the regression session she realized that she was happy and that what happened years ago as a child is not going to happen again. She was able to distinguish the past from the present and let go of the responsibility that she felt for her parents parting.

It can be seen that the wounds become scars and sometimes fester and bleed affecting ones present.

Thirdly children who have seen physical abuse between parents grow up in their mind taking sides. They have already identified themselves with one of the parent. As they grow up they begin to play manipulative games with the other. When the marriage has been a power struggle the child at a very suggestible age imbibes the wrong rules. Life becomes a playground and spouses players. Winning becomes the goal but there are more fouls called out. Children who grow in such homes feel they are victims. When you feel like a victim you go looking for perpetrators. It is like being a victim seems comfortable as they have no other experience to compare with. They feel they can cope with distrust, distress and go into damage control by marrying a perpetrator and setting things right.  Having experienced a whirlpool walking on a bed of grass may seem disquieting. This victim role gets them onto the nexus of repeating the same pattern and lands them in an equally difficult marriage.

To get out of this recurrent cycle of repetitive patterns of unhappiness walk the line towards freeing yourself. This involves three steps:

1)      Recognize that your life is not moving in the way you had thought it should have. At the end of the day it seems that you are living one of your parents life.  Decide to make a conscious decision to snap out of it.
2)      Awareness at every moment when the past stares into your face and you look at it as an opportunity of change. Change your reactions and create an alternative response. They more you repeat the response the more the new response will get wired into your neurological system..
3)      Explore new ways of coping and experiencing. This will require effort but a step in this direction will take you towards a New You.

“When all doors seem shut, watch carefully they may open from the inside.”

Past Life Raaz: The Mystic Journey - Through Past Life Therapy

Past Life Raaz: The Mystic Journey - Through Past Life Therapy: " Now in Ahmedabad at The Hotel Comfort President on the 30th and 31st July ..."

The Mystic Journey - Through Past Life Therapy

The Mystic Journey- through Past Life Therapy
                                                                                                          By Dr Trupti Jayin

Life is an adventure but we take life too seriously as we don’t understand who we are and why we exist in this material plane. The workshop on Mystic Journey through the past life lens makes the attempt to take you through the adventure and open doors to the infinite self.

My personal journey has been enhanced by the many people who have had faith and trust in me to aid their spiritual awakening. Past life therapy is an effective tool to uncover the mystery called us. The workshop has been designed to give you information and experience to develop insight and accept who you really are.

In actuality we are aware very little of our psychic inheritance. Each individual chooses the time and place of every life in his reincarnation cycle. This may sound unbelievable but if you understand the truth behind the reincarnation dramas then you will realize that the real reason why we are here!!
What really matters is the understanding of consciousness. We are yet to solve the mystery of consciousness and past life therapy could unravel the deeper layers of the subconscious mind. The therapy is a technique to help us to move to the bottom of the ice berg.
The profound understanding of the laws of nature is that the essential nature of the physical world is that it is non physical.  Everything is energy and information. We are beginning to understand that wherever there is energy there is information. There is a need to know that though we live in a mechanistic society we have to look beyond the microscopic vision that man has developed. Are we born to achieve, amass wealth and marry and then die and disappear? It seems so futile then to be on this amazing planet. Is it futile???Past life therapy and reincarnation research has been around for the last 20 years but it is recently that more attention has been given to the fact that this therapy can actually help you to overcome the problems that seems to plague you in living a better life. When Swans turn into Ugly Ducklings!!!!

In the many years of my professional practice and the many clients who have come to me the one thing that they brood upon is the many intolerable, upsetting moments that made up their childhood. Some would talk about comparisons made by their mother with their smarter sibling or their more successful neighbors daughter or just because her gender didn’t give her the Y strands to be more liked. Most would cry over physical abuse and torment that their parents lavished over them due to alcohol addiction or financial stress or family disenchantment that their parents had or felt. Few would speak about incest, which somehow got worse as they grew up and has continued to plague their thinking and raises its hood when they get into an intimate relationship. Insecurity and worthlessness surfaces and they are unable to sustain their involvement in the relationship leaving them wounded all their life. History taking in a psychologists practice is very important and for the last few years I have adopted a more insightful approach by asking them to get their baby photographs from age 0-13 years. As my clients speak about their childhood moments they remember incidences that otherwise would have remained a shadow during the interview. Feelings and emotions rise and many cries openly about the discrimination that they feel in their life even today.

When we look at our childhood the lens though which we view ourselves changes. From the many roles that we play in our lifetime, the most important role is of a child. The abandonment with which we traverse those times is strewn with innocence and
Unconditional ness to our surroundings. Due to trauma, which the surrounding inflicts on our innocent nubile, self our perception of our world changes. This results in our perception of ourselves taking a new dimension- one that begins to make us seem like a victim of circumstances.

Let me share with you all a case where you can see this very clearly. A 52-year-old journalist S.K came to see me. SK’s wife of 18 years had left him and the complain was that he was critical, angry and unable to adjust to anything in the house. He was short tempered, expecting her to bend backwards to please him. She could not take it any more and decided to leave him. His 16-year-old daughter stayed with him but was uncommunicative. He felt that he was abandoned and cried when he spoke about feeling unloved and uncared for. He was so involved with his pain of loss that he could not view his wife’s statements with logic or insight. Taking about his childhood he broke down. During the hypnotic session he could regress back to the early time where he got in touch with the suppressed emotions of abuse. He was one of the twins born to educated parents. He had an elder brother four years older to him. His lawyer father and professor mother had somehow felt that SK was a telltale and complaining. His twin brother used to get him in trouble. His elder brother too would somehow side with his twin. SK ‘s parents never believed him and they would punish him for the slightest mistake but never his other brothers. Discrimination and labeling him into a monster began early. The punishment also became severe. One day he was made to stand with a stool tied over his back for more than four hours. His belief that the world is a cruel, intolerant and horrible place grew. One day he ran away from home. He was only 12 years old. He slept on platforms and ate from garbage bins. The police found him and took him home. His anger and resentment grew. His twin was sent to his grandmother’s home to stay away from him. His elder brother was by then on his own. SK felt singled out for doom. Very soon he realized that he had to fend for himself. He began to study and was now looking for a way to get out again. At 18 he began to stay at a hostel and earn as a free lancer. His anger continued. He could not make friends and distrusted everyone. Fate intervened and he was given a chance to happiness. He fell in love with a Social Worker and they married. Very soon he began to control the situation. Subconscious simmering fear raised its hood. He began to doubt her love and would become suspicious. He would get angry and upset for the slightest of error on his wife’s part. There was a healthy exchange of ideas too as his wife understood his disposition but fights and arguments continued. He thought there were only empty threats when she said that she would leave. But one day when his wife packed her suitcase he realized that he needed help to manage his anger and childhood demons, which had never been buried. Therapy helped. He came to understand and release his encapsulated emotions and let go off the need to control his relationships. His wife has not returned home but SK’s relationship with his daughter is better. She stays with him and does not blame him for her mother walking out. His wife does maintain a friendship and he has become quite social. He has enrolled in salsa class and learns the flute. His work is appreciated and he is attracting approval for his ideas in his office. Life seems worthwhile and he worthy of life.

This is not an isolated case. Abuse of any kind is detrimental. No child should be ever made to feel that he or she is not complete or whole. A 16 year old boy that has been admitted in our hospital two days back is another case where his early academic failures and dysfunctional indulgent joint family giving out conflicting signals has lead the boy to become manipulative and demanding. Parents have been pampering since his childhood. Their motto has been – “ When he cries shut him up with what he demands. He won’t disturb the peace.” When he failed in the 6th grade they hit him with a belt till he cried and in utter frustration broke things worth thousands with his bare hands. He was hit more and this went on for months. Parents did not think for once that he could have learning disability or attention deficit disorder. Today six years later he has petit mal epilepsy, dislocated shoulder and psychotic behavior. Parents are asking the question, ‘ what is wrong with him, why does he behave like this? We have always given him what he wants?  Gosh!!! When are parents going to realize that what you give you get. So wake up before you raise your hand, speak a hurtful word or /and don’t attend to your child’s emotional needs.

As a psychologist I can only appeal – “ Please see the world through your child’s eyes. Hit yourself with a belt before to think or raising it on her/him. Hear the abuse before you speak it out aloud and feel the pain in your chest before you decide to inflict it on others. Be human not a he-man.
Wake up to living and valuing the little child that you have. Maybe you need to look at your child as your mirror. The more you understand yourself the better you will cope with your child. Happy parenting means creating Happy Memories.
